Our involvement in Sustainable Fire Suppression began in 2023 when we launched the Alpine Fire campaign. It was groundbreaking at the time and is now an industry-leading initiative.
Our sustainability story
Back in 2023, we started focusing on the unacknowledged impact that the weekly testing regime had on water scarcity in the UK. We calculated that 4 billion litres of drinking water were lost each year, an unintended consequence of the critical fire-safety testing cycle.
The footprint of industrial buildings and warehouses in the UK continues to expand and - without a new approach - the amount of lost testing water is only going to increase. In 2025, we have extended our scope to a broader definition of sustainability in fire suppression, one that includes CO2 emissions from diesel pumps and the legacy use of unsustainable chemicals in buildings that, if deployed, will have a devastating effect on the environment. That number is only going to increase.
We work hand in hand with our clients on this topic, as they are as committed to sustainable fire suppression as we are. Together, we are pioneering a new approach in this industry.
The Alpine Fire Campaign
The Alpine Fire campaign took us to the heart of the UK Government, where we engaged with regulators, stakeholders and politicians from all sides to address this issue.
In the last two years, we have started implementing a new approach to solving these age-old problems. We were delighted that our trade body, BAFSA, built its entire winter 2025 conference around the theme of Sprinklers & Sustainability, and we are grateful for their support in such an important matter.
Sustainable Fire Suppression: established 2025
Since 2023, the Alpine Group has campaigned for a change to the legislation surrounding fire detection and suppression. We believe that more needs to be done by all parties - government, suppliers, industry bodies and business owners - to consider the impact on the environment of the existing testing regime.
We absolutely support a rigorous and thorough fire testing regime which is highly regulated and a cornerstone of a modern industrialised economy. Nothing is more important to us or our customers than protecting their people and property from fire. However, it doesn’t have to be at the expense of the planet.
That's why we're building a coalition of organisations that share our desire to modernise our industry. Leaders who are prepared to step up and ask these tough questions and look for innovative modern solutions.
